Creating an eBook - Things to Consider When Writing an eBook

Quick Guide for eBook Creation

If you're thinking about writing an eBook, whether it be a short informational guide you intend on self-publishing for promotional purposes, or a rich content eBook you plan on submitting to a publisher for marketing, there are some general criteria you should be aware of.

There are no short-cuts, but if you follow these guidelines your eBook creation is more likely to be a smooth process.

Start with a plan

Establish a practical plan to ensure your vision becomes reality. Try using a mind map to help organize your eBook content. If you're not familiar with a mind map it's a great way to get your ideas out of your head and into an organized text format.

Format your document

Take your plan and set up your favorite word processor. Creating and formatting a template should be done first so you can keep the same format throughout the book. It will save you a lot of headaches; keep it simple, it will be read on a small e reader device as well as a computer. Avoid building a website inside your eBook.

Choose the right topic

Research to see what is popular, be original and look for ideas you believe in or feel strongly about, chances are your readers will feel the same way. As you collect information and ideas you will eventually be satisfied with a topic your confident in writing about.

Design an appealing cover

You should have no problem finding online services or software for eBook cover design. Outsourcing is also an option. Use a quality image that will compliment your eBook title and avoid fancy font and text sizes. Limit your colors and keep your title a reasonably large text size.

Decide on a conversion method and file type

Will you convert the original word.doc to one file type or send it to an eBook publishing service? Either way put some effort into identifying and correcting any flaws. You could convert to one file type and be ready to self market or you could choose to submit to a compiling service for a variety of file types. The eBook compiler or publisher may initially reject it and allow you a chance to make the changes required.

Marketing plan - Self Publish or Outsource

You will need to have a serious look your marketing plan. Consider the content you want to include in your eBook. Whether or not you have a short story eBook with little to no imagery, or you want to test eBook conversion technology with an image rich eBook, will be deciding factors.

Your options also depend on how broad of an audience you wish to reach, and what format(s) your eBook will be converted to. Hopefully you make the right choice and your eBook is available to as many readers as possible so they can enjoy your eBook as much as you enjoyed creating it.
